Petersham Ribbon

If you like the look of grosgrain ribbon as a trim, or wish to use it for the binding on hardback shades (as commonly suggested), I highly recommend you use Petersham ribbon, instead. Invented by Lord Petersham in the mid 19th century for use on uniforms, and since used for hats, waistbands, corsets, etc., this ribbon has a scalloped or picot edge, allowing it to curve and mold smoothly around the shade. Grosgrain has a bound edge, making it inflexible, and resulting in lots of puckers.

Because grosgrain is actually imitation Petersham, as you can see, it's hard to visually tell the difference between them. You might find Petersham, locally, at better fabric stores, or see Trims & Embellishments - Judith M Hats and The Sewing Place for Petersham by the yard, as well as JKM Ribbon & Trims (top of the list), who only sell it by the bolt, but it can be dyed. Also be sure to search the other trim and fabric sources, as some of them also carry it.
